Shahdol, Nov 7 (IANS) In a shocking incident, a 20-year-old youth has been arrested for beating his mother to death with household items in Barkachchh, a tribal village in Madhya Pradesh’s Shahdol district.
Police suspect that the young man, hurt by repeated scolding for his lack of interest in studies, killed his 40-year-old mother Savita Kola.
This crime, which came to light on November 4, has shaken the peaceful village of Biohari police station area.
Neighbors became suspicious after not seeing Savita Kol or her son for several days, after which they alerted the police officials.
When the police broke the locked door of the house, a horrific scene emerged: Savita’s body was covered in blood, her skull was crushed, and her son was sitting silently beside her, unresponsive.
The weapon, a wooden stick and a kitchen pestle used for grinding spices, were lying nearby, stained with blood.
Speaking to IANS, Biohari sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Mukesh Abindra confirmed the arrest.
“Prima facie, the motive is to repeatedly scold the mother about her arbitrary behavior and failure to pursue education,” Abindra told reporters.
“He was associated with local miscreants and was angry at her efforts to reform him. We have arrested him on Thursday night and are investigating the matter.”
The son, whose identity has been kept secret due to the ongoing investigation, remained largely silent during the interrogation, offering no confession or defense.
Locals described Savita as a devoted single mother – her husband reportedly died of illness years earlier, leaving her to raise the boy alone amid financial difficulties.
She worked as a daily wage laborer in the nearby fields. The son, who was often seen hanging out with a group of unemployed youths drinking alcohol, was a constant subject of concern.
Savita’s body has been sent for post-mortem, yet preliminary investigation revealed multiple blunt-force injuries to the head and face, leading to instant death due to intracranial hemorrhage.
Blood samples and the murder weapons have been sent to forensic experts for analysis.
Police are also examining the son’s mobile phone to check for any digital footprints linked to outside influences, including possible exposure to violent online content – a growing concern in rural Madhya Pradesh, where a 2024 NCRB report shows a 15 per cent rise in crimes influenced by social media.
The case echoes similar matricides in the state; In 2023, a 17-year-old boy in Jabalpur killed his mother due to a pocket money dispute.
