Kolkata: Four-time Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha member Kalyan Banerjee allegedly lost Rs 55 lakh in an online financial fraud in West Bengal.
According to Banerjee, a former chief whip of the Trinamool Congress in the Lok Sabha, he had a bank account in the State Bank of India (SBI) where his salary as a member of the West Bengal Assembly was deposited between 2001 and 2006, when he was a Trinamool Congress MLA from the Asansol (South) constituency, which was then part of undivided Burdwan district and is now a part of West Burdwan district.
The account was deactivated due to being inactive for a long time.
However, recently it came to his notice that first an amount of Rs 55 lakh was transferred from his personal account in the Kalighat branch of SBI to that dormant account, and later the entire amount of Rs 55 lakh was debited from that dormant account.
He immediately contacted SBI officials and SBI had already filed a complaint in this regard with the Cyber Crime Division of Kolkata Police. The police had already started investigating the case.
A city police official confirmed, “The entire matter is being investigated thoroughly. Bank officials are also being contacted. Efforts are being made to trace the fraudsters. Also, the bank officials are also investigating whether there was any lapse on their part.”
It has been revealed that the photograph and mobile number of a four-time Lok Sabha member was used to carry out that fraud.
However, Banerjee herself has refrained from commenting on this issue to media persons.
A Trinamool Congress leader close to Banerjee said, “However, Banerjee is hopeful that the police will resolve the matter as soon as possible and get her money back.”
