Chandigarh: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed an FIR against former Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Mohammad Mustafa, his former MLA wife Razia Sultana and others in connection with the death of his son Akil Akhtar under mysterious circumstances in Haryana’s Panchkula on October 16.
Akhtar’s wife and sister have also been named in the First Information Report (FIR) under sections of murder and criminal conspiracy. However, the family claimed that his death was due to drug overdose.
A complaint by his neighbor Shamshuddin Chaudhary alleged foul play and a case of murder was registered.
Initially this case was registered by Haryana Police on the complaint of Chaudhary of Malerkotla city of Punjab and later the case was transferred to CBI on the recommendation of the state government.
The complainant cited a video posted by Aqeel on August 27 in which he alleged strained family relations and expressed fear for his safety.
In the 16-minute video, Akil also mentioned serious family feud and claimed that his life was in danger. In the video, Akil alleged that his mother and sister were part of a conspiracy to kill him or implicate him in a false case.
They also spoke of being forcibly detained, sent to rehabilitation centers and deprived of their business income. “They have taken everything from me,” Aqeel said in the recording.
A CBI spokesperson said an FIR was registered against four people on Thursday under sections 103 (1) and 61 of the Indian Judicial Code (BNS).
According to CBI, the FIR was registered on the allegations of unnatural death of Akil Akhtar, son of Mohammad Mustafa and Razia Sultana, residents of Panchkula.
“The FIR was lodged on the allegation that there was resentment between the deceased and his family,” the spokesperson said, adding that the investigation would be conducted by a special team.
CBI has started collecting digital and forensic evidence and will interrogate the people named in the FIR. It is also probing the circumstances of Akil’s death, including internal disputes within the family, mentioned in the complaint.
