Kolkata, Nov 6 (IANS) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said she will not fill the enumeration forms before other residents of the state, which are required for the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) by the Election Commission of India (ECI).
The chief minister confirmed that the booth-level officials concerned came to his official residence-cum-office in Kalighat in south Kolkata and collected the enumeration forms.
“Yesterday, the concerned BLOs came to our neighborhood to do their specific work. As per the work, they came to my residence-cum-office and found out how many voters there are in the residence and gave them the form. I have not filled any form myself, and until every person in West Bengal fills his form, I will not fill mine either,” the Chief Minister said in a social media post on Thursday afternoon.
However, she denied reports by some local media houses that she came out of her residence and personally accepted the enumeration form from the concerned BLO. He also claimed that such reports are false, misleading and purposeful propaganda.
“Various media outlets and newspapers have reported that I came out of my residence and collected the enumeration form from the BLO with my own hands! This news is completely false, misleading and purposeful propaganda,” the chief minister said in a social media post.
The Chief Minister and his party have been opposing the SIR since the beginning and have claimed that the amendment exercise is just an attempt by the BJP and the Central government to impose NRC in the state.
Trinamool Congress general secretary and party’s Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee had threatened to hold rallies from Bengal to New Delhi in front of the ECI headquarters if the name of even a single genuine voter was removed from the voter list.
On the other hand, BJP had claimed that Trinamool Congress was opposing the SIR due to fear of removing names of illegal Bangladeshis and Rohingyas from the voter list.
The first phase of the three-phase SIR in West Bengal started from Tuesday. During this phase, BLOs are reaching the voters’ doorstep with the counting forms. The entire process is expected to be completed by March next year.
