Among those who cast their votes in the first few hours of voting on Thursday (November 6) were several senior politicians, including Bihar Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Chaudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, RJD leader and India Bloc CM candidate Tejashwi Yadav and Union ministers Giriraj Singh and Rajiv Ranjan Singh ‘Lallan’.
Around 54% of the 3.75 crore voters in 121 assembly constituencies in 18 districts voted till 3 pm, an official said. The highest turnout so far was 73.29% in Meenapur. The lowest turnout was recorded in Digha at 39.1%.
“Voting is not only a right but also a duty of citizens in a democracy,” Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who voted in his hometown Bakhtiyarpur, posted on Twitter.
Tejashwi Yadav cast his vote at a booth in Patna’s Veterinary College along with his family members, including RJD supremo Lalu Prasad.
Tejashwi Yadav said, “I appeal to the youth to bring change by forming a new government.”
Outgoing Hasanpur MLA and expelled RJD leader Tej Pratap is contesting from Mahua, a seat he first won in 2015 during his election debut on RJD ticket.
Voting began at 7 a.m. amid tight security arrangements, an official said. This continued till five in the evening. A total of 3.75 crore voters will decide the electoral fate of 1,314 candidates in the first phase.
