Explosion in hydrogen and nitrogen products manufacturer mississippi Ammonia leaked on Wednesday and nearby residents were forced to evacuate, officials said.

Andre Robinson, who lives about a half-mile from the facility, said he and his son were preparing to make gumbo when they heard a sonic boom or what sounded like a tree falling on their house.

When he looked outside, Robinson said he saw a large plume of brown smoke rising from the facility and smelled a strong smell of ammonia.

The Yazoo City facility includes an ammonia plant, four nitric acid plants, as well as other plants. It is capable of storing approximately 48,000 tons of ammonia, although the exact amount in the facility was not immediately clear when the explosion occurred.
The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality said in a post on Twitter that “the air monitoring campaign is ongoing and will continue as long as necessary to ensure public safety.”
