A “historic” deal worth £100 million has been agreed between two major wind farms and the developers of Belfast Harbour, which will create around 300 jobs.

Work is being carried out on Belfast Harbor so that the site will be ready for use from 2028.
Mona and Morgan offshore wind farms will be built between Isle of Man, North Wales and north-west England.
Once operational they can deliver up to three gigawatts of power, which is enough electricity to power around three million UK homes.
Dr Theresa Donaldson, Chairman of Belfast Harbour, explained that Belfast is the only port with offshore wind capabilities on the island of Ireland and added that “it is uniquely placed to become a key enabler of future power stations in the Irish, Celtic and North Seas due to the combination of our existing facility, our expertise, local supply chain and location.”

He made the comments as he reaffirmed the UK Government’s commitment to renewable energy and a net zero target ahead of next week’s Cop30 global summit.
German energy company EnBW and London-based offshore wind company Jera Nex BP are behind Mona and Morgan.
Nathalie Oosterlink, chief executive of Jera Nex BP, described the deal as a “direct contribution to the infrastructure needed to drive the energy transition”.
EnBW senior vice president Michael Klaas said it was a “milestone commitment”, adding: “We are optimistic about fostering the long-term partnership between Germany, the UK and Northern Ireland.”
The Harbor invests all profits back into the port and the deal will help finance a new dual-purpose cruise and offshore wind site.
It will also help pay for works to further strengthen the terminal to handle the next generation of offshore wind turbines, whose components can weigh more than 1,000 tonnes.
