The earthquake occurred at 7.49 am, with its epicenter located about 3.6 km northwest of Bhutnal Tanda in Vijayapura taluk.
Officials said the seismic event was minor and caused no damage.
The coordinates recorded were 16.91 degrees north latitude and 75.75 degrees east longitude, KSNDMC said in a statement, adding the quake originated at a shallow depth of five kilometers below the surface.
“An earthquake of magnitude 2.9 was recorded by KSNDMC network in Vijayapura district, with its epicenter located 3.6 km northwest of Bhutnal Tanda, Vijayapura taluk,” the statement said.

According to the centre’s analysis, the epicenter was located 4.3 km west-southwest of Inganal village, 4.6 km northeast of Hanchinal village, 9.3 km north-northeast of Vijayapura town and about 65 km north of the Almaty Dam Seismological Observatory.
KSNDMC clarified that the observed intensity was low and tremors could be felt up to a radial distance of 50-60 km from the epicenter.
It further said that such an earthquake will not cause any harm to the local community as the intensity observed is low, although local tremors may be felt.
The area falls under seismic zone III, and the tectonic map indicates that the area is devoid of any major structural discontinuities, the KSNDMC agency urged residents to remain calm, adding that the community need not panic as both the magnitude and intensity observed are low.
Earthquake tremors have been occurring in the district and surrounding areas for the past few days.
