During an interview with ABC News co-anchor Martha Raddatz on Sunday, Duffy said it was necessary to implement further changes to flight to ensure the public’s safety.

Government shut down This week is poised to become the longest week in history, as the standoff between Democrats and Republicans stretches into a new month. Millions of people could lose food assistance benefits, and health care subsidies are about to expire, taking some real talking between the parties on how to end the impasse.

During this time, President Donald Trump He said in an interview broadcast Sunday that he “will not be extorted” by Democrats who are seeking negotiations to extend Affordable Care Act subsidies that expire at the end of the year for millions of Americans. Echoing congressional Republicans, the president told CBS’s “60 Minutes” that he would negotiate only when the government reopens.

Transport Secretary Sean Duffy has warned that conditions for flights could get worse if the government shutdown is not ended

Transport Secretary Sean Duffy has warned that conditions for flights could get worse if the government shutdown is not ended ,getty,

“We will delay and cancel any flights in national airspace to ensure public safety,” Duffy said.

“When we have one controller that is doing two jobs instead of one there is an increased level of risk in the system.

“We don’t want accidents, we want people to go safely and so we will slow down and stop traffic if we don’t think we can manage it in a way that people are safe when going from point A to point B.”

Trump’s pressure on the filibuster comes as Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D. And it could prove a distraction for Republican senators, who have opted to stay the course as the consequences of the shutdown become more intense.

Republicans are hoping at least some Democrats will finally give them the votes they need, as moderates have been in weeks-long talks with rank-and-file Republicans about potential compromises that could guarantee a vote on health care in exchange for reopening the government. Republicans need five additional Democrats to pass their bill.

Duffy warned that airport delays and cancellations would get worse if the shutdown continued.

“If the government does not open in the next one or two weeks, we will look back as these were good days, not bad days,” he said.

On Sunday, the Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey due to a shortage of air traffic controllers.

Flight tracking website FlightAware recorded 5597 delays in, out of or into the United States in addition to 640 cancellations.

According to an advisory board overseen by the new York TimesNo incoming flights were able to land for an extended period on Thursday because “no certified traffic controllers were available.”

Orlando’s airport experienced delays of an average of 2 hours and 40 minutes, with some delays lasting up to 12 hours.

As of Monday, the tracking website recorded 392 delays and 221 cancellations.

In a statement on Twitter, the FAA said about 13,000 air traffic controllers had been working without pay since the shutdown, which has ensured more than 50,000 daily operations in the national airspace system.

The administration said half of its core 30 facilities were understaffed, and about 80 percent of air traffic controllers were absent from New York-area facilities.

“After 31 days without pay, air traffic controllers are under extreme stress and fatigue,” the FAA said.

“The shutdown must end so these controllers can get the pay they have earned and passengers can avoid further disruptions and delays.

“As we continue to reiterate, we will never compromise on safety. When there is a staffing shortage, the FAA will reduce the flow of air traffic to maintain safety. This may result in delays or cancellations.”
