Hyderabad, Nov 3 (IANS) The Telangana government has ordered an inquiry into a road accident that took place in Rangareddy district on Monday, in which 20 people died and several others were injured.

Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, who reached Chevella, told media persons at the government hospital that an investigation has been ordered into the collision between an RTC bus and a tipper lorry.

He said the immediate priority of the government is to ensure best possible treatment to the injured and provide all possible help to the families of the deceased.

The Transport Minister said that 72 people were traveling in the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) bus, which was coming from Tandur to Hyderabad.

A tipper truck laden with gravel collided with the bus on the Hyderabad-Bijapur highway near Mirzaguda in Chevella mandal, about 60 km from Hyderabad.

Hinting that the accident occurred due to negligence of the tipper driver, Ponnam Prabhakar said action would be taken after investigation.

Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy held a video conference with top officials and directed them to provide immediate relief to the victims.

The Transport Minister said that an officer will be appointed to help the family of each deceased in the transportation of bodies and conduct of last rites.

Describing the accident as unfortunate and painful, the minister said that this is not the time for politics.

He claimed that road safety is the top priority of the government. The Transport Department is trying to create public awareness about road safety at the school level.

“No matter how many new rules we bring in and how many investigations we do, we need the public’s cooperation to prevent accidents,” he said.

Prabhakar noted that hundreds of people die in road accidents every day in the country and Telangana records less than 20 deaths every day. He said that the Transport Department is taking serious action on removing danger spots on the highways and on fitness of vehicles and other issues.
