Jaipur, Nov 2 (IANS) At least 18 people were killed and around six others were injured when a tempo traveler loaded with passengers collided with a parked trailer truck in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur district on Sunday. Police gave this information.
The tragic incident took place near Matoda area of Phalodi subdivision, about 160 km from Jodhpur city, when the vehicle returning from Kolayat in Bikaner collided with a trailer parked on the roadside.
According to the police, the tempo traveler was carrying pilgrims from Sursagar area of Jodhpur, who were returning home after visiting Kolayat Mela, a religious event held every year in Bikaner district.
“Preliminary investigation reveals that the vehicle was traveling at high speed and failed to see the parked trailer in time due to low visibility in the morning,” said a senior officer from Matoda police station.
According to sources, so far 18 people have been confirmed dead, while at least six others have been injured.
After the accident, local residents and police personnel from nearby stations conducted a rescue operation to rescue the passengers trapped inside the damaged vehicle.
The injured persons were taken to the hospital, while the bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem.
As soon as the information was received, senior officials including police officers reached the spot.
Efforts are underway to identify all the victims and inform their families. It has been revealed that the front part of the tempo traveler was completely crushed in the accident, which shows how severe the collision was.
It is being told that the trailer on which the tempo traveler was traveling was allegedly carrying construction material.
Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma expressed grief over the deaths and directed officials to ensure prompt medical aid to the injured.
Chief Minister Sharma wrote on Twitter, “The death of people in a road accident in Matora area of Phalodi is extremely sad and heart-wrenching. My condolences are with the bereaved families. District administration officials have been directed to ensure proper treatment of all the injured. I pray to God to grant peace to the departed souls and speedy recovery to the injured.”
Police have registered the case and are investigating the cause of the accident.
Both the vehicles involved in the accident will be mechanically examined to find out the exact cause of the accident and reasons such as brake failure or driver fatigue will also be investigated, sources said citing officials.
