Kanpur, Nov 2 (IANS) Chief Election Commissioner of India Gyanesh Kumar was on Sunday honored with the Distinguished Alumnus Award by IIT Kanpur at a function organized on its campus.

“A proud moment, celebrating excellence, integrity and leadership in public service,” the Election Commission of India (ECI) said in a post on Twitter.

The Distinguished Alumni Award (DAA), instituted in 1989, is the highest award given by IIT Kanpur to its alumni for their outstanding achievements, a statement said.

It said that every year, the institute works with its alumni to honor individuals for their outstanding achievements, service to the institute and exemplary contributions to society and nation building.

CEC Gyanesh Kumar graduated with B.Tech in Civil Engineering from IIT Kanpur in the year 1985 and was honored with the award by the institute during its 66th Foundation Day celebrations on Sunday.

The list of past recipients includes eminent names spanning the fields of academic excellence, entrepreneurial excellence, professional excellence and service to the nation.

Earlier in the day, CEC Gyanesh Kumar assured peaceful and transparent assembly elections in Bihar while affirming “zero tolerance towards violence”.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event, the CEC said: “ECI has zero tolerance towards violence. Elections in Bihar will be conducted peacefully, legally and with complete transparency, ensuring that every voter gets the opportunity to express his/her wishes and participate in this democratic festival…”

CEC Gyanesh Kumar said, “It is expected that all the voters of Bihar will exercise their franchise.”

The first phase of Bihar elections is on 6 November, the second phase is on 11 November and counting of votes is on 14 November.

Addressing an event organized by Mathura Vaishya Samaj, Kanpur, he described the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar Voter List as the world’s largest exercise for purification of voter list.

“The day the voter list containing names of 51 crore voters in 12 states is purified, it will be historic and something that has never been attempted before,” he said.
