New Delhi, Nov 2 (IANS) A 57-year-old woman, who was allegedly repeatedly involved in illicit liquor smuggling in north-east Delhi’s Jyoti Nagar area, was arrested by the Delhi Police, with over 1,300 liters of illicit liquor recovered from her possession. An official gave this information on Sunday.
According to the police, the incident took place during evening patrolling when constable Rajdeep and lady constable Bhavna saw the woman sitting outside her house with a bucket covered. When his behavior seemed suspicious, the team examined the bucket and found several quarts of liquor inside.
Following the search, the police raided the premises and recovered a total of 7,309 quarters – 1,315.62 liters – of illicit liquor, which was marked “for sale in Haryana only”. The accused was identified as Ms. ‘ABC’, a resident of the area.
“Accordingly, a case has been registered at Police Station Jyoti Nagar under Section 33 of the Delhi Excise Act and investigation has been initiated,” Delhi Police said in a press note.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the woman was previously involved in eight similar cases, indicating her continuing role in the illicit liquor trade.
Police said further investigation is underway to find out the source of the liquor and whether more people are involved in the racket.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Outer North District of Delhi Police, following a tip-off, arrested four people and seized a huge consignment of illicit liquor in a major crackdown on the illicit liquor trade.
The Anti-Auto Theft Squad (AATS) team stopped the suspects near UER-II Road towards Sector-34, Rohini, while they were carrying the consignment.
Police recovered 149 cartons containing 7,450 liquor quarters along with three vehicles allegedly used in the smuggling operation – a Mahindra Bolero pickup, a Hyundai Aura and a scooter.
The arrested accused have been identified as Vishal (30), Vinod (48), Sunil (27) and Mausam (26). Officials said that a case has already been registered against Vishal under the Excise Act.
