Chennai, Nov 2 (IANS) A new low pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal on Sunday, but heavy rainfall is unlikely over Tamil Nadu, the Regional Meteorological Center (RMC), Chennai said.

It said the system, which is currently developing over southern parts of Myanmar and the adjacent Andaman Sea, is expected to intensify further during the next 24 hours.

In its latest weather bulletin, the RMC said: “The existing cyclonic circulation over southern Myanmar and adjoining Andaman Sea is likely to strengthen today and develop into a low pressure area over the same area.”

However, it clarified that there is no forecast of heavy rain in Tamil Nadu for the next seven days.

Meteorologists said the speed and intensity of the system will determine whether it could turn into a depression or a cyclone over the Bay of Bengal in the coming days.

At present, it is expected to move north-westwards, causing isolated rain over coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and North Tamil Nadu later this week, if conditions remain favourable.

Meanwhile, in a separate update, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the low pressure area over the east-central Arabian Sea, which was in existence since October 31, has now weakened.

The system, which moved east-northeast, became a well-marked low pressure area on Saturday morning and has remained over the same area.

According to the IMD, this weakening system is likely to move north-northeastwards towards the north-eastern Arabian Sea and south Gujarat coast in the next 24 hours, possibly developing into a minor low pressure area again before dissipating.

Despite weather systems developing on both sides of the Indian peninsula, officials stressed that Tamil Nadu will experience generally dry weather throughout the week, with only isolated pockets of light or moderate rain possible.

Chennai and surrounding districts are expected to have partly cloudy sky with maximum temperature hovering around 35 degrees Celsius and minimum temperature around 26 degrees Celsius.

Fishermen have been advised to remain cautious over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining Andaman Sea, where wind speed may reach 35-45 kmph, gusting to 55 kmph at times due to increased circulation. Meteorologists said that further updates will be issued after the new system strengthens over the Bay of Bengal.
