“This product is therefore unsuitable and should be avoided by anyone with a peanut allergy or intolerance”.

According to the Food Standards Agency, around six percent of the UK adult population has some type of food allergy – around 2.4 million people.

It is estimated that around 1 in 50 children in the UK are allergic to peanuts and this is rising, the charity Allergy UK said.

There has been a threefold increase in peanut allergies in recent decades. However scientists believe these rates could be reduced if peanut products were included in the diets of all children at four to six months of age.

Researchers at the University of Southampton found that peanut allergies are more common in children with severe eczema and egg allergies. As a result, they recommend giving eczema peanut butter or other suitable peanut snacks to babies starting at four months of age.

Scientists estimate that this could reduce peanut allergies in the entire population by up to 77 percent.

In a notice posted on Saturday, Aldi said: “As a precautionary measure, our supplier is recalling Dairyfine Crispy Choc Ums because they may contain peanuts. Customers are asked to return this product to their nearest store, where a full refund will be given.

“We apologize that this product does not meet our usual high standards and thank you for your cooperation.”

This notice comes after Aldi Forced to recall ice cream tubs Which was sold without the major allergen on the label.
