England’s top-order batsmen failed once again in their final international match before the Ashes new zealand Claimed 3-0 clean sweep of ODI series with tense two-wicket win Wellington,

After losing the toss for the third consecutive time, faced favorable seaming conditions. England With the help of Overton’s inning of 68 runs in 62 balls, the team was out at 222 runs after scoring 44 runs for five wickets in 10.1 overs.

Overton then affected a run-out and took two for 32 in a whole-hearted all-round effort as the Black Caps were reduced to 196 for eight, but Jack Foulkes and Blair Tickner powered them home in a nervy atmosphere as England slumped to their 12th defeat in their last 16 one-day internationals.

Excellent bowling performances were unable to disguise the much worse batting conditions, with all of the top five traveling to Australia the following week ahead of the first Ashes Test on 21 November.

Jamie Smith, Ben Duckett, Joe Root and Jacob Bethell are short of runs and have just one practice – against England Lions – in between after failing to rediscover some form at Mount Maunganui last weekend, Hamilton on Wednesday and Sky Stadium on Saturday.

Smith was out in the second over, perhaps surprised by the hint of extra bounce as his attempted cut took an edge off Foulkes, whose late inswing had Root LBW.

When Duckett toe-ends the backtracking Rachin Ravindra off Jacob Duffy harry brook Hung his bat and gestured to slip, it meant England’s top four had scored a combined 84 runs in the three ODIs, the lowest in a men’s three-match series or tournament.

Bethel, dropping one place to fifth, dismissed Duffy for 11 to end the series with 31 runs, it was not the impression the stylish left-hander wanted to leave as he competed for a place in England’s Ashes XI with Ollie Pope.

Jos Buttler and Sam Curran put on a partnership of 53 before Tickner rearranged his stumps, but Overton and Brydon Carse, each with four sixes in a quickfire 36, ensured they did not sink without a trace.

Overton was particularly impressive as he marshalled the tail, scoring 58 with Carse, 26 with Jofra Archer and 36 with Jofra Archer. adil rashidIn which the Surrey all-rounder contributed 34 runs in 22 balls to complete his first ODI half-century before being dismissed for the last time.

Archer was furious and reached 90 mph, but conceded 24 runs in an over – more than was given in 10 at Hamilton – as he and Carse struggled to replicate the movement found earlier by Foulkes and Duffy.

With openers Ravindra and Devon Conway, making hay for the injured Kane Williamson, it took a moment of good fortune to separate them.

Overton removed Ravindra’s drive onto the stumps at the non-striker’s end to dismiss Squire Conway for 34, while Carse similarly dismissed Tom Latham, taking New Zealand from 78 for no loss to 113 for four, with Ravindra also a casualty after being bowled by Curran for 46.

When Rashid was brought on late in the 30th over, Michael Bracewell hit Bethel hard, while Carse called Santner to miss Brook in the ring and the impressive Overton dismissed Nathan Smith.

Daryl Mitchell’s pair of unbeaten half-centuries had propelled New Zealand to victory last week and he looked set to make it a treble, but he was out for 44 when Curran set up a grandstand final through Buttler.

With Archer, Carse and Overton out and the number of balls not mattering, Foulkes and Tickner struggled to reduce the target to under 27 when they came together in single figures.

The jubilant crowd cheered his every run and after Tickner (18 not out) leveled the score with an oblique pull, Foulkes (14 no) dismissed Curran for four, giving New Zealand victory with 32 balls to spare.
