UBT’s Worli MLA Aaditya Thackeray reignited the debate over voter list discrepancies with a presentation on October 27, reiterating Rahul Gandhi’s earlier allegations of “voter theft”. Thackeray claimed that his team has identified more than 19,000 anomalies in Worli constituency alone.
“During the May 2024 Lok Sabha elections, a person was shown dead in the voter list. But in the November 2024 state assembly elections, the same person was added to the list with exactly the same details but a different EPIC number,” Thackeray said.
Similar concerns have been raised by other opposition leaders in recent months. In September, Balram Patil of the Peasants and Workers Party (PWP) alleged that more than 24,000 names were duplicated in the voter list of Panvel, while in Raigarh the figure crossed 84,000. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray went ahead and claimed that there are around 96 lakh fake voters across the state.
The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), which includes the MNS along with Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress and NCP (SP), said they have submitted several complaints to the Election Commission but have not received any satisfactory response yet. Some leaders also said that they had earlier approached the Bombay High Court on this issue but no action was taken.
The opposition alleges that the ruling BJP is using the Election Commission for political gains, a charge the party has strongly denied. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis hit back, saying, “The opposition is doing all this just in the media. They are not serious about it. That is why they do not go to the right platforms and stick to the media.”
With local body elections expected to be held soon, opposition leaders hope the November 1 protest will prompt the Election Commission to act on their complaints and ensure accuracy in the state’s voter list.
