Mumbai, Oct 31 (IANS) Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Friday asked the BJP-led grand alliance government to immediately waive off the loans of farmers without causing them further ‘trouble’.

In a letter addressed to the government, he asked if the loans are being waived off, do farmers need to pay the existing installments.

Saying that farmers are burdened with “mountains of debt” and badly affected by natural calamities, he said, “The insensitive and careless administration of the government has once again tried to buy time by giving pickles to the farmers trapped in such a terrible and sultry crisis.”

“When the plight of farmers is visible, what kind of study will the committee do and report? If indeed there is going to be a loan waiver in June next year, should farmers pay the current loan instalments?” Thackeray asked.

He further asked, “If these installments will be waived in the loan waiver in June next year, then why will the farmers repay them? Will the farmers get Rabi loan without repaying the loan? If they get new loans, will they also be waived off? Who will answer these questions?”

“Before providing other assistance, farmers are asking for soil to repair the damaged land. But the government is not ready to do anything about it. The farmer who feeds the world is in dire straits today. The government announced compensation worth thousands of crores of rupees, but the question is how much money has come into the farmers’ accounts. It has been raining in Maharashtra for six months and this has increased the problems of the farmers. The farmers are completely devastated. What could be a more ‘right time’ than this. Loan To provide waiver? Yet the government’s delay in saying that it will provide loan waiver when the time comes is a cruel joke on farmers,” Thackeray claimed.

Pointing out that farmer suicides are continuously being reported from Marathwada, Vidarbha and North Maharashtra, he said, “Does these rising suicide figures not reach the ears of the government? By dilly-dallying on loan relief, this government is pushing farmers to the brink of death. Will the government take responsibility for the farmer suicides occurring till June? The government is only playing with the farmers. In short, the current plight of the farmers will remain the same as the government has said before next June.” Agricultural loan waiver will be provided.” Year.”

Thackeray’s move to write to the government comes a day after Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ meeting with former minister and Prahar organization chief Bachchu Kadu announced on Thursday night that the government will take a decision on farm loan waiver before June 2026.

CM Fadnavis’ announcement comes after Kadu, supported by various farmer organisations, staged a protest in Nagpur demanding farm loan waiver.

The government on Thursday constituted a nine-member committee headed by retired bureaucrat and CEO of Maharashtra Institution for Transformation Praveen Pardeshi to recommend short and long-term suggestions to make farmers permanently debt-free.
