Bengaluru: Karnataka Police on Friday arrested former Bengaluru University Registrar Professor BC Mayilrappa for allegedly sexually assaulting a widow and threatening her life. Basaveshwaranagar police made the arrest following two complaints filed by the victim.
An FIR has been registered under sections 74, 75, 78, 352 and 351 of the BNS Act. Mylarappa has been taken for medical examination and the police are preparing to produce him in court by the end of the day.
According to the police, the woman, whose husband had passed away, came in contact with Mylarappa in 2022 and worked in his institute.
The woman alleges that the accused took advantage of her being alone and started misbehaving with her. He allegedly started sending her messages and demanded that she cooperate with him.
She further alleged that Mayilrappa came to her house, repeatedly knocked on her door and demanded that she open the door and entertain him. Unable to tolerate the harassment, the woman lodged a complaint at Basaveshwaranagar police station.
While the police were investigating the case, the woman lodged another complaint at the Kamakshipalya police station, saying that she was being threatened to withdraw her complaint against Mayilrappa. She alleged that a group of people threatened her and said that her life would be in danger if she did not withdraw the complaint and they also threatened her with acid attack.
After these developments and considering the seriousness of the case, the police arrested Mylarappa. Further investigation is underway.
BC Mylarappa is the former Registrar of Bangalore University, who was removed from the post by the Karnataka High Court in 2012 due to issues like alleged plagiarism and misuse of funds. After being removed, he continued to hold other roles at the university, although his appointments faced challenges and scrutiny, including a 2019 directive to the university to remove him from positions such as director of distance education and head of sociology.
In 2019, the Department of Higher Education directed Bangalore University to remove him from the posts of Director of the Directorate of Distance Education and Chairman of the Department of Sociology, terming his appointment illegal and saying he was not fit to hold any top post.
Professor Mayilrappa, former Chairman of the Department of Sociology, was appointed Registrar (Administration) in November 2011. He was known as the first Registrar of BU from the Scheduled Caste category and the youngest Registrar at that time.
After being forced to leave the post of Registrar, Mylarappa also took up political career and sought tickets from parties like Congress or JD(S) to contest the state assembly elections.
