After ‘Justice for RG Kar’, now Trinamool’s slogan is ‘Justice for Pradeep Kar’

Kolkata, Oct 30 (IANS) After the gruesome rape and murder of a female junior doctor inside the hospital premises at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata last year, this slogan echoed across the state and indeed the entire country – “Tomar swar, amar swar, justice for RG Kar. Sara Banglar ektai swar, justice for RG Kar (Your call, my call, justice for RG Kar; there is only one call for the whole of Bengal).” RG Justice for tax).

Maintaining a rhythmic similarity with that earlier slogan, the Trinamool Congress has now coined a new slogan – “Sara Banglar Ektai Swar, Pradeep Kar liye Nyay (The whole of Bengal has just one call, justice for Pradeep Kar)” – as the tagline for the ongoing protests over the suicide of 57-year-old Pradeep Kar in Panihati in North 24 Parganas district earlier this week, after his name was reportedly mentioned in the National Citizen. Was excluded from the register (NRC).

On Thursday, Trinamool Congress held its first protest rally in Pradeep Kar area, where party leaders and supporters were seen carrying placards with new slogans written in Bengali.

Rally participants were also heard raising the same slogan as they walked around the neighbourhood, describing what they described as a tragic outcome of the NRC exercise. The rally was led by Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha member from Barrackpore constituency Partha Bhowmik and party MLA from Panihati Nirmal Ghosh, among others.

At the conclusion of the rally, Bhowmik said that this is the beginning of a broader movement, and protests will be organized across West Bengal in the coming days, against what he called the BJP’s “attempt to create fear among people by using the Special Intensive Amendment (SIR) and NRC as tools”.

Bhowmik said, “Our party and the state government stand strongly with Kar Kar’s family. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee have assured them of all possible assistance.”

On November 4, the day the first phase of the three-stage SIR process is scheduled to begin in West Bengal, the leader of the opposition in the state assembly is expected to lead a counter-rally in the same area, demanding a thorough investigation into Kar’s death.

Bhowmik said, “The leader of the opposition has the freedom to organize that rally. However, his rally will be of political nature. Our rally today was a rally of the common people.”
