Prince Andrew ‘will face private prosecution’ after Giuffre-Epstein scandal: latest

The Met Police have confirmed they are “actively investigating” new allegations that Andrew tried to use his police bodyguard to discredit his accuser.

Earlier this week, a protestor surrounded King Charles and asked him about Prince Andrew’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

As he shook hands with people during a visit to Lichfield Cathedral in Staffordshire on Monday, Charles was asked if he had asked the police to “hide” his brother.

In a video of the incident, a protester can be heard shouting: “How long have you known about Andrew and Epstein? Have you asked the police to cover for Andrew?”

“Should MPs be allowed to debate the royals in the House of Commons?”.

King, who was a few feet away, did not answer questions and others could be heard telling the heckler to “go away” and “shut up.”

Campaign group Republic announced on Thursday it would instruct lawyers to launch a private lawsuit against Prince Andrew following sexual assault allegations.

According to its website, the pressure group works with the aim of “replacing the monarchy with an elected head of state and a more democratic political system”.

It has previously run a number of campaigns and demonstrations against the monarchy, including a recent protest outside Andrew’s home, the Royal Lodge.

Most prosecutions in the UK are brought by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) on behalf of the Crown.

In this situation, the CPS bears responsibility for initiating the proceedings and the costs.

However, a person can choose to prosecute themselves under section 6(1) of the Prosecution of Offenses Act (POA) 1985.

In this case, the person or body behind the prosecution will instruct lawyers and bear the costs of the process itself.

MPs can debate Prince Andrew’s conduct, his 30-room mansion and the possibility of him being stripped of his dukedom.

The government has so far refused to allocate time in the House of Commons for MPs to discuss Andrew’s situation because the royal family wants Parliament to focus on “important issues”.

But this issue may be raised some day when ministers do not have control over the parliamentary timetable.

A Liberal Democrat source indicated that sunday times The party may be prepared to use one of its protest days to allow MPs to discuss Andrew’s behaviour.

The Metropolitan Police has previously looked into allegations relating to Andrew and Epstein’s activities in London three times and opted not to investigate.

The force has repeatedly refused to launch a full investigation into claims he slept with Guiffre in London when she was 17.

Prince Andrew strongly denies all allegations made against him by Ms Giuffre.

Independent Buckingham Palace has been contacted for comment.
