UK treasure chairman Rachel Reeves Apologized for breaking the law by renting it out London Unlicensed house.

Prime Minister keir starmer He said he would not take action over what Reeves called an unintentional mistake.

After the Labor Party was elected in July 2024, Reeves and his family moved out of their south London home and into a government-owned apartment next to the Prime Minister’s Downing Street residence.

The Daily Mail newspaper reported late on Wednesday that Reeves did not have a rental license, as required by the local authority in the area. Landlords who are not licensed may be prosecuted or fined.

In a letter to Starmer published by the Prime Minister’s Office, Reeves said it was “an unintentional mistake. As soon as it was brought to my attention, we took immediate action and have applied for a license.”

Starmer replied that he had consulted with the government’s ethics adviser, who concluded that “further investigation is not necessary.”

“I am satisfied that this matter can come to an end with your apology,” he wrote.

Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch Said this was not good enough and called on Starmer to launch a full investigation.

Reeves is already under pressure over public finances as she prepares to deliver her annual budget statement on November 26.

The Labor Party government has struggled to achieve the economic growth it promised. Inflation remains high and the economic outlook is weak, making efforts to repair deteriorating public services and reduce the cost of living disappointing.

Reeves has hinted that she may abandon a pre-election promise not to raise income tax or sales tax, arguing that after 14 years of Conservative government the economy is in worse shape than before.

Starmer has already lost members of his government to the scandal.

In September, Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner resigned after failing to pay sufficient tax on home purchases. Days later, Starmer fired Britain’s high-profile ambassador to Washington, Peter Mandelson, over his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
