New Delhi: In a major crackdown on drug trafficking under the ‘Drugs-Free Delhi’ campaign, the Crime Branch of Delhi Police has busted an inter-state drug supply network, arrested four accused and recovered 3.150 kg of good quality charas, worth around Rs 1.2 crore in the international market. A Centro car used in drug smuggling was also seized.
According to Delhi Police, the Anti-Robbery and Snatching Cell (ARSC) team stopped a vehicle near Mukandpur Chowk on October 22 after receiving information about a supplier coming from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh.
The car driven by Chunni Lal was chased for about five kilometers before it was stopped. Despite the search initially yielding nothing, a dog squad was called and the dog ‘Amro’ of the K-9 unit detected the hashish hidden inside a specially designed cavity in the vehicle.
“Dog ‘Amro’ from the Dog Squad (K-9) reached the spot and did a wonderful job and detected the contraband hidden in a cavity of the car. The said cavity was specially designed by the accused for transportation of the contraband. A total of 2.060 kg of charas was seized from their possession, which has an international market value of Rs 80 lakh,” the police said in its press note.
Police said Chunni Lal was earlier convicted in the Himachal Pradesh NDPS case and spent 10 years in jail before being released in 2023.
Soon thereafter he allegedly resumed drug trafficking. On the basis of his interrogation, on October 28, the supplier Prakash Chand, resident of Kullu, Himachal Pradesh, was also arrested.
In a separate operation on October 24, the same team caught Mumbai resident Yogesh Kolambakar from Mukarba Chowk with 1.092 kg of hashish.
Kolambakar, a tile showroom employee and part-time bhajan singer, had allegedly sourced the drug from Himachal and was planning to take it to Mumbai.
Police said he was a habitual consumer of charas for the last 20 years and also supplied it to acquaintances in a bhajan troupe.
During interrogation, the accused revealed the increase in demand for charas in Delhi-NCR and Mumbai during the festive season.
Police said the smuggled goods were found near the suppliers in the upper forest areas of Kullu, which were allegedly cultivated by Nepalese groups.
DCP Sanjeev Kumar Yadav said, “Further investigation in both the cases is underway to trace other suppliers and recipients of the narcotic substance.”
