Srinagar, October 30 (IANS) The proceedings of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly were disrupted on Thursday when opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs entered the well of the House raising slogans against the National Conference (NC) government led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
Soon after the House proceedings began for the day, BJP MLAs came to the well of the House raising slogans against the NC government. The opposition BJP on Wednesday moved an adjournment motion demanding a discussion on the flood victims in Jammu and Kashmir.
Chairman Abdul Rahim Rather had rejected the adjournment motion on Wednesday. BJP members stopped the assembly proceedings on Thursday morning demanding discussion on the flood victims.
Unable to restore order in the Assembly, the Speaker asked marshals to remove the BJP members from the well of the House.
Two BJP MLAs were marshaled out of the House for refusing to leave.
The autumn session of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly started on October 23 and will end on October 31 i.e. Friday.
The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly has 90 members, of which 41 are from NC, 28 from BJP, 6 from Congress, 3 from PDP, 1 from CPI-M, 1 from Awami Ittehad Party (AIP), 1 from Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), 1 from People’s Conference (PC) and 6 Independents.
An independent joined the NC, while the Congress decided to support the NC government from outside without joining it.
At present two seats are vacant and by-elections are to be held on these two seats, Nagrota in Jammu division and Budgam in the valley on November 11.
Nagrota seat became vacant after the demise of BJP MLA Devender Singh Rana on October 31, 2024.
BJP has fielded Rana’s daughter Devyani Rana from Nagrota seat while National Conference has fielded Shamim Begum.
NC had offered Congress to field its candidate from Nagrota seat, but the Congress high command refused to field its candidate from Nagrota.
The Budgam seat fell vacant after Omar Abdullah decided to resign from the seat after winning two seats in the 2024 assembly elections.
NC has fielded Agha Syed Mahmood from Budgam, while PDP has fielded Agha Muntajir Mehdi and BJP has fielded Agha Syed Mohsin.
