Chennai, Oct 30 (IANS) Over 10,000 police personnel have been deployed in and around Pasumpon town for the 118th birth anniversary and 62nd Guru Puja celebrations of freedom fighter Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar.
Vice President CP Radhakrishnan, Chief Minister MK Stalin, several state ministers, Members of Parliament, MLAs and other political leaders are participating in the state-level event, which began on October 28.
The high-profile presence of the dignitaries has prompted authorities to tighten security and traffic rules across Ramanathapuram district.
According to officials, police forces have been deployed from several districts of southern Tamil Nadu to ensure smooth conduct of the celebrations.
Section 163 prohibitory orders will remain in force, and strict restrictions have been imposed on entry of vehicles and movement of crowds near the memorial site.
Those attending the festival are required to obtain prior police permission and are allowed to travel only in their personal vehicles. To prevent overcrowding and maintain order, entry of hired and two-wheelers has been banned in Pasumpon.
Since Thursday is an official government festival, buses and goods vehicles from other districts will not be allowed to enter through Parthibanur, Kamuthi, Mudukulathur and Sayalgudi.
Vehicles from Madurai are being diverted via Poovandhi, Sivagangai, Kalayarcoil, Sarukani, Thiruvadanai, RS Mangalam and Devipattinam to reach Ramanathapuram, and the same route applies for return trips. To facilitate the movement of devotees from nearby villages, the government has arranged additional bus services to Pasumpon.
Police have cautioned the participants not to indulge in unsafe or illegal acts like hanging outside moving vehicles, sitting on rooftops, bursting crackers or raising inflammatory slogans.
38 check posts have been set up across the district to monitor compliance. Two officers have been appointed to each special bus for security.
Additionally, 300 body-worn cameras have been issued to the police on duty, and 150 CCTV cameras have been installed for real-time monitoring.
Besides this, 57 two-wheelers and 53 patrol vehicles are continuously deployed on rounds, control rooms have been set up to monitor the entire operation.
With three-tier security, technology-aided surveillance and strong administrative coordination, the Ramanathapuram District Police is hopeful that the Thevar Jayanti and Guru Puja celebrations will be peaceful and in full discipline.
