Although Vance did not specify the exact number of legal immigrants he believes should be admitted to the US, he said it is “much less than what we are admitting.”

A woman in the audience questioned Vance about his stance on legal immigration.

“And when you talk about a lot of immigrants here, when did you guys decide on this number? Why did you sell us a dream?” The woman asked.

“How can you, as vice president, stand up there and say ‘We have too many of them now, and we’re going to take them out’ to the people who are here the right way, by giving the money that you guys asked us for? You gave us the way out and now how can you stop that and tell us we don’t belong here anymore?”

The Vice President later said: “We cannot have an immigration policy where what was good for the country 50 or 60 years ago essentially binds the country to the future. There are a lot of people who want to come to the United States, and my job as Vice President is not to look after the interests of the whole world.
