Wayanad (Kerala), Oct 29 (IANS) Congress MP and general secretary Priyanka Gandhi on Wednesday attacked the Election Commission over the second phase of Special Intensive Review (SIR) that will be conducted in 12 states/Union Territories (UTs).
Speaking to media persons in Malappuram, Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi said, “We strongly oppose this. This is just a way of rigging and cheating the elections.”
Referring to the SIR conducted a few months before the high-intensity Bihar assembly elections, he said: “We have seen what they have done in Bihar and how they have implemented SIR there, and if they are going to do it in every state, it is an insult to democracy and we have to fight it.”
The Congress leader is on a two-day visit to Wayanad, during which she will inaugurate various development projects in her constituency.
She reached Karipur airport in the morning and left for Wayanad from there.
Earlier in the day, he inaugurated the newly constructed building of Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Government Ayurveda Dispensary at Ernad in Malappuram district, which falls under his constituency.
On October 27, the ECI announced the second phase of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in 12 states and Union Territories (UTs).
These include election states like West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said the SIR will cover 51 crore voters across 12 states and the counting process will begin from November 4.
The Chief Election Commissioner thanked the people of Bihar for the successful completion of SIR in the state during a press conference. “Voters in Bihar participated enthusiastically. As a result, not a single appeal was filed,” he said.
The last SIR was conducted more than 21 years ago in 2002-2004. The CEC said in its comment that this had been done eight times between 1951 and 2004.
