Hyderabad, Oct 29 (IANS) One person was washed away in floods while another was rescued as the impact of Cyclone Montha lashed parts of Telangana on Wednesday as it weakened into a deep depression after crossing the Andhra Pradesh coast in the early hours of the day, even as the administration has been put on alert in view of the forecast of more heavy rains.

A DCM vehicle was washed away in flood waters in Khammam district and its driver went missing.

The vehicle was washed away in Nimmavagu stream near Janaram bridge in Konijarala mandal. Locals tried to warn the driver not to enter the water, but he did not pay attention and within minutes the vehicle was swept away. The driver also got washed away along with the car.

A person who was swept away in the Kagana river in Vikarabad district was rescued by the local people. The incident occurred near Veerishettipalli in Tandoor mandal. The person was identified as Narasimhlu of Aganur village in the same district.

Four youths saw a man floating in the river and ran to save him with the help of a rope. Narasimhlu got trapped in the flood waters and was swept away in the river.

In Nalgonda district, personnel of police and other departments rescued 500 students of a government residential school trapped in flood waters. The building of the Tribal Welfare Boys’ Residential School at Kommapalli village in Deverakonda mandal was submerged in water flowing from a nearby stream, and students were screaming for help.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for six districts of Telangana. Red alert has been issued for Hanamkonda, Warangal, Mahabubabad, Jangaon, Siddipet and Yadadri Bhuvanagiri districts.

In view of heavy rain. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has directed the entire administration to remain on high alert.

In view of the overflowing drains and canals, the Chief Minister directed the district authorities to evacuate the families living in low-lying areas and shift them to relief camps.

The state irrigation department was alerted to closely monitor the water level in all projects, reservoirs and other water bodies. District collectors should be alerted before releasing water from overflowing reservoirs. Sand bags should also be kept ready on water bodies and reservoirs filled with heavy water flow.

Officials told the CM that the impact of Cyclone Montha is expected to be more severe in Khammam, Warangal and Nalgonda districts. As Hyderabad continues to receive heavy rains, CM Revanth Reddy has ordered local civic authorities to deploy disaster management teams to rescue people in flooded areas in the city.

In the districts affected by heavy rains, SDRF and NDRF teams have been instructed to conduct rescue operations in a coordinated manner under the guidance of District Collectors.

Inquiring about the impact of heavy rains on public transport, the CM directed officials to stop vehicular traffic on low-lying bridges and overpasses, which have been flooded by heavy rains. Police and revenue officials were ordered to set up barricades near flooded bridges and keep a watch on them.

He mainly took information about the impact of Cyclone Montha on paddy harvesting and directed the officials to take necessary precautions to prevent losses due to heavy rains. He asked the officials to make special arrangements at paddy and cotton procurement centres.

Following the halt of Golconda Express and Konark Express trains at Dornakal Junction and Gundratimadugu station in Mahabubabad district and diversion of several trains by Southern Railway authorities, the Chief Minister suggested that alternative arrangements should be made without causing any inconvenience to the stranded passengers.
