Bengaluru, Oct 28 (IANS) Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday called on the state police to join the mission of making Karnataka a “drug-free state”, and urged officials to take strong and coordinated action against the menace.

The Chief Minister said, “My aim is to make Karnataka drug-free and I urge you to also make it your aim. If we achieve this, the people of Karnataka will express their gratitude to the police department.”

He was speaking after distributing new peak caps to police personnel, inaugurating the Anti-Narcotics Task Force and releasing the ‘Sanamitra’ action plan handbook at an event organized by the Karnataka State Police Department at the Vidhana Soudha Banquet Hall in Bengaluru.

He said, “Our youth, students and the younger generation should not fall victim to drugs. The police department should take a strong and committed stand against this menace.”

“In Mangaluru district, earlier there were frequent incidents of communal clashes and misbehavior by police personnel. The officer in charge at that time failed to maintain control, so I ordered the transfer of two officers. Now, Mangaluru district is under control. This achievement is also our own officers and staff – they are not from some other world; they are ours. So, if you resolve to do it, everything is possible. Prove it through your work,” the Chief Minister said. requested.

He said, “In the same way, it is possible for you to curb the drug menace in the entire state. If you succeed, the reputation of Karnataka Police will rise to international standards.”

Appealing to the conscience of police officers and employees, Siddaramaiah said, “Some police personnel are linked to real estate operators and drug networks. It is within your power to stop the unruly elements from the beginning. The fear of the police in the criminal world has diminished. Ask yourself why this happened – you know the answer.”

“You know who sells drugs, who brings them and who are the agents in this network. Make Karnataka a ‘drugs-free state’ as soon as possible. Achieve it and show results,” he urged.

The Chief Minister said, “The design of the peak cap released today was chosen by me personally. We have changed the model which was in use for almost 70 years since 1956. Now, both officers and personnel will have a uniform cap design. I hope this change will boost your confidence.”

“It’s not just the hat that should change – your performance should also improve,” he said.

Praising the efficiency of the police department, the Chief Minister said, “The government earns a good name because of the dedication of the police department. The state’s prestige has been enhanced by Karnataka Police being ranked number one in the country in the India Justice Report.”
