China’s influential new law wants only degree holders to discuss sensitive topics

A new law in China, which came into effect on October 25, requires influencers to prove their official qualifications before creating social media content on sensitive topics such as medicine, law, education and finance.

According to Morocco World News, the new rule has sparked huge debate online, with critics warning that it could harm creativity and limit freedom of speech.

China’s influential new law: what to know?

Defending the law, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) said it was brought in to protect people from misleading content and harmful advice available online.

From now on, creators will be required to disclose evidence of expertise before posting content related to regulated topics. Evidence may include a degree, license, or certification in a related field.

Apart from influencers, platforms like Bilibili, Weibo and Douyin, which is the Chinese version of TikTok, will also have to verify the credentials of creators available on their platforms and ensure that the content being shared has proper citations and disclaimers.

How does this work?

When uploading content on the platform, people will now have to clearly highlight whether AI-generated content is included or whether there is any reference to research studies.

Users should be aware of their responsibilities when sharing content online.

Additionally, the CAC has also banned the advertising of medical products, supplements and health foods. This was done to avoid propaganda being disguised as an “educational” video, Moroccan News reports.

Netizens react

Many have welcomed the decision, noting that it will allow people to view well-informed content on the platforms. Some of them have argued that only people with relevant qualifications should be allowed to speak and discuss particular issues to prevent misinformation.

“It’s time for people with real expertise to lead the conversation,” reads one user’s comment on Weibo.

However, many others warn that the new law limits freedom of speech because it will restrict independent voices and critical debate on social media.

“Next thing you know, we’ll need a license to post opinions,” one Beijing-based creator shared on Weibo.

He has said that the law would give officials too much power to decide on individuals who can count as “experts”.
