Representatives from more than 30 countries, including researchers and policy makers, will deliberate on comprehensive and practical solutions to tackle climate change at the conference to be held in Mumbai in February next year.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday (October 28) announced that the global level conference, ‘Mumbai Climate Week’ will be held from February 17 to 19.

The event, conceptualized by Project Mumbai in collaboration with the Maharashtra Department of Environment and Climate Change and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), will be held at the Jio World Convention Center in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).

A release from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said representatives from more than 30 countries from the Global South (countries located in developing parts of Africa, Latin America and Asia), including experts, researchers and policy makers, will participate in the event and deliberate on comprehensive and practical solutions to combat climate change.

The announcement about the three-day conference was made at a meeting held at the ministry, which was attended by Environment Minister Pankaja Munde, BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, Department Secretary Jayshree Bhoj and Project Mumbai CEO Shishir Joshi, among others.

On this occasion, the Chief Minister unveiled the logo of ‘Mumbai Climate Week’ and launched its introductory film.

Fadnavis said the initiative underlines India’s leadership in climate action and environmental sustainability.

“Inspired by the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mumbai and Maharashtra are ready to contribute to building an equitable, innovative and well-funded climate future for the Global South,” he said.

The international meeting will focus on three main themes – food systems, energy transition and urban resilience – with discussions from the perspective of justice, innovation and finance, the release said.

The Chief Minister said the time has come to take collective action involving citizens, businesses and every section of the society to reduce the impact of climate change, a phenomenon which refers to long-term changes in temperature and weather patterns.

“After this programme, we should also define standards and targets for Maharashtra and Mumbai to act decisively in the climate sector,” Fadnavis stressed.

Joshi, CEO of Project Mumbai, said the initiative is a historic milestone for Maharashtra and India, promoting inclusive, people-led solutions for climate resilience.
