Jaipur, October 28 (IANS) Two people died and 12 others sustained burn injuries when a bus carrying laborers came in contact with a high-tension power line in Manoharpur area, about 50 km from Jaipur, on Tuesday.
According to officials, the workers were being taken to a brick kiln in Todi village when the accident occurred.
The bus reportedly collided with a high-tension line passing overhead, causing electric current in the vehicle and causing a fire. Local people reached the spot and helped rescue the people trapped inside the burning bus.
Eyewitnesses said several passengers suffered severe burns before being pulled out.
The villagers claimed that they had repeatedly urged the local administration to remove or increase the height of these high-tension lines, but no action was taken.
On receiving information about the incident, Jaipur District Collector Jitendra Soni and senior police officers reached the spot.
A special district police and civil defense team was also deployed to assist in rescue operations. The injured were first taken to Shahpura sub-district hospital, where doctors declared two workers brought dead.
Five seriously injured patients were later referred to Sawai Mansingh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur for advanced treatment.
Hospital officials confirmed that an emergency team was put on alert to receive the victims.
Preliminary investigation shows that the bus crossed the safe height limit and came in contact with an electric wire.
Police have registered a case of negligence against the bus driver and are investigating further.
The deceased have not been identified yet but it is believed that they were migrant workers working at the local brick kiln.
Expressing grief over the incident, Congress leader Ashok Gehlot said, “Tragic incident in Manoharpur, Jaipur, where a bus carrying workers caught fire after coming in contact with a high-tension line, resulting in the death of two people and injuries to many.”
Former Chief Minister Gehlot said, “The increasing number of such accidents in Rajasthan is a matter of grave concern. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, and I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.”
Recently, more than 20 people were burnt to death in a bus fire incident in Jaisalmer.
