Agartala, Oct 27 (IANS) A woman digital content creator from Agartala has been arrested in Tripura for spreading obscenity through social media against several prominent personalities, police said on Monday.
Following the arrest of digital content creator Madhabi Biswas on Sunday, she was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court on Monday, a police officer said, seeking her seven-day custody and the court remanded her to three-day police custody.
Recently Biswas became a regular content creator on her Facebook channel with her style of criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, former Chief Minister and BJP Lok Sabha member Biplab Kumar Deb and Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor and BJP MLA Deepak Majumdar on various issues.
Several AMC councilors and BJP leaders filed more than a dozen complaints against Biswas at various police stations in Agartala.
Acting on a complaint lodged by Paramita Ghoshal on Sunday, a women police team led by senior officers raided Biswas’s residence in Jogendranagar in West Tripura district and arrested him.
West Agartala police station officer-in-charge Rana Chatterjee said on Monday, “Biswas was accused of spreading obscenity through social media platforms. A case has been registered against him under various provisions of IT and BNS (Indian Code of Justice, 2023).”
A complaint was filed against him at East Agartala police station last month for criticizing the Prime Minister’s visit to Tripura Sundari Temple on September 22.
Meanwhile, fulfilling a long-awaited public demand, the Prime Minister on September 22 inaugurated the redeveloped 524-year-old Mata Tripura Sundari Temple and performed puja at the Kali temple.
Tripura Human Rights Organization, an NGO fighting for rights, on Monday condemned the arrest of digital content creator Biswas.
“For the past few days, the police had been pressurizing him to stop criticizing the state government on social media, but he continued to do so. That’s why he has been arrested. We demand his unconditional release. He was arrested for asking other people not to criticize the government,” said Purushottam Ray Barman, senior lawyer and president of the right body.
However, he said that he is against any kind of obscenity and defaming any person. Meanwhile, Tripura Police had in October last year arrested journalist Saikat Talapatra from Sodepur in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district on charges of defaming Chief Minister Manik Saha, his family members and several other politicians through his online channels. There were several cases registered against Talpatra in various police stations of Tripura.
Over the past few years, Talpatra had also defamed former chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb, Tipra Motha Party (TMP) supremo Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, Congress leader Sudip Roy Barman and several other politicians through his YouTube and Facebook channels.
