Chennai, Oct 27 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president MK Stalin on Monday said his friendship with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was built on the belief that “the interest of the nation should always be above that of individuals”.

Late Congress MLA R. In remarks at Chokkar’s family wedding, Stalin described his relationship with Rahul Gandhi as a bond born of mutual respect and shared ideology and said the partnership between the DMK and the Congress will continue to protect the democratic and secular fabric of India.

He said, “Our understanding is shaped by ideology and shared vision for the unity of India and progress of Tamil Nadu. There is no doubt that this alliance will safeguard the future of our country.”

The chief minister’s comments come at a politically crucial time, cementing the alliance between the DMK and the Congress ahead of next year’s assembly elections, amid reports of internal Congress voices demanding more seats and greater influence within the alliance.

Reflecting on his personal relationship with Gandhi, Stalin said: “Rahul Gandhi is the only political leader whom I call my brother. I do not address others that way. He calls me his elder brother even during phone conversations, and I can never forget that affection. Our friendship has turned into a powerful political bond that speaks for India.”

The DMK chief also recalled the cordial relations between late Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and Congress veteran Chokkar and said he was witness to Chokkar’s passionate advocacy for his constituency in the Assembly.

Stalin said, “Their friendship reflects mutual respect beyond party lines, which is what today’s politics needs.”

He praised Chokkar’s son, Mr. Raja Chokkar, who now heads the Virudhunagar District Congress Committee, for continuing the legacy of his father’s service and commitment to the people.

Highlighting Tamil Nadu’s progressive social reforms, Stalin said the newly married couple were from different communities. “It was under the leadership of CN Annadurai that the DMK government amended the Hindu Marriage Act in 1967 to legalize self-respect marriages. Today’s marriage is a reminder of that inclusive approach,” he said.

The event, attended by several leaders of the DMK and Congress, underlined the deepening ties between the allies as they gear up for the 2026 assembly elections.
