Hyderabad, Oct 26 (IANS) Terming drunk drivers as terrorists who destroy families, Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar on Sunday warned that there will be zero tolerance for drunk driving.
Sajjanar, who is known for his tough stance against drunk drivers, issued the warning through a post on social media platform ‘X’.
He was reacting to the bus fire incident near Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh on Friday, in which a drunken biker caused the death of 19 passengers.
“Drunk drivers are terrorists. Period. Drunk drivers are terrorists, and their actions are nothing less than acts of terror on our roads. The horrific Kurnool bus accident, which took the lives of 20 innocent people, was not an accident in the true sense of the word. It was a preventable carnage, caused by the reckless and irresponsible behavior of a drunk biker. It was not a road accident but an act of negligence It was a criminal act. “The entire family was wiped out in a matter of seconds,” the IPS officer wrote.
The post reads, “The bike driver has been identified as B. Shiv Shankar, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol. CCTV footage shows him refueling his motorcycle at 2.24am, minutes before he lost control and his decision to drive under the influence at 2.39am turned a moment of arrogance into a tragedy of unimaginable scale.”
“I stand firm on my statement that drunk drivers are terrorists in every sense. They destroy lives, families and futures. Such acts will never be tolerated. In Hyderabad, we are taking a zero-tolerance stance against drunk driving. Every person caught driving under the influence will face the full force of the law. No leniency for those who endanger innocent lives, no There will be no exceptions and no mercy. It is time that we, as a society, stop calling drunk driving a mistake. “This is a crime that destroys lives and deserves appropriate punishment,” Sajjanar said.
Meanwhile, the Cyberabad traffic police on Sunday said it launched a special drive on drunk driving over the weekend, resulting in the arrest of 457 offenders.
A total of 346 two-wheeler, 20 three-wheeler, 86 four-wheeler and five heavy vehicle riders were booked.
According to the police, the blood alcohol concentration (BAC) level of 399 criminals ranged from 35 mg/100 ml to 200 mg/100 ml, while the BAC level of 34 criminals ranged from 201 mg/100 ml to 300 mg/100 ml. The other 24 offenders had BAC levels ranging from 301 mg/100 ml to 550 mg/100 ml.
All criminals will be presented in the court.
Cyberabad Police clarified that if anyone is found driving under the influence and causes a fatal accident, such persons will be booked under Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Justice Code, 2023. The maximum punishment under this section is 10 years’ imprisonment and fine.
A total of 336 drunk driving cases were disposed of in the courts last week, in which 317 people were fined and 19 people were sentenced to one to two days in jail. Another 23 people were assigned to social services as punishment.
