Chennai, Oct 26 (IANS) In a major citizen outreach initiative, the municipal corporation has announced that special meetings will be held in all 100 wards from October 27 to 29 to address key local issues and increase citizen participation in urban governance.
Each meeting will be presided over by the concerned ward councilor in the presence of senior corporation officials. Representatives of residents’ welfare associations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and local community members are expected to participate.
The corporation has urged residents to actively participate in the sessions and express their concerns regarding public services.
According to officials, the meetings will discuss several civic issues including drinking water supply, solid waste management, maintenance of roads, streetlights, parks and storm water drains.
“We are encouraging people to highlight shortcomings in civic services. Three complaints from each ward will be selected as top priority for immediate redressal,” an official said.
The review will also detail the ongoing welfare and educational initiatives like the Chief Minister Breakfast Scheme implemented in government and aided schools.
The corporation’s teams will assess the cleanliness standards, infrastructure and preparedness of schools for the upcoming northeast monsoon.
It is expected that the meetings will serve as a platform to identify immediate needs and plan pre-monsoon preparedness measures.
Ward councilors have welcomed the move, noting that such meetings have historically proven effective in moving projects forward faster and resolving grievances.
Councilor C. Shanthi from Ward 41 said, “All the grievances raised during the meeting will be uploaded on the Mudhalwarin Mugavari portal, allowing residents to easily track the progress of their petitions. The petitions presented in these special sessions are usually given priority. In my ward, two major projects were approved after the last such meetings.”
Corporation officials said the collective feedback from the three-day event will be consolidated into a comprehensive action plan to improve service delivery across the city. By promoting direct interaction between citizens and civic administrators, the initiative aims to create a more responsive and transparent governance framework.
