us President donald trump It has been termed “historic” ceasefire between cambodia And Thailand On Sunday, the two countries signed an extension of the peace agreement to end their border conflict.

Mr Trump, who is in Malaysia, had threatened both countries with higher tariffs to force them to agree to end the fighting, which has resulted in dozens of deaths and displaced hundreds of thousands of people.

The US President announces that both sides have agreed to end all hostilities and that the “peace agreement” will save millions of lives.

At least 18 Cambodian prisoners of war will be released after this ceasefire Expansion, he said. The agreement orders both sides to begin removing heavy weapons from the border area.

The agreement was signed shortly after Mr Trump arrived in Malaysia – the first stop on his whirlwind five-day Asia tour. They watched Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul sign an extended ceasefire at the annual summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), of which both countries are members.

“We did something that a lot of people said couldn’t be done,” Mr Trump said. The Cambodian leader called it a “historic day”, while Thai Prime Minister Charnvirakul said the agreement “laid the foundation for lasting peace”.

Before signing the deal, the Cambodian leader thanked Mr Trump for his “decisive leadership” and “tireless efforts” to end the conflict in July. “Any dispute, no matter how difficult and complex, should be resolved through peaceful means,” he said.

In July the two Southeast Asian neighbors fought their worst border conflict in a decade that left nearly 40 people dead and hundreds of thousands displaced. The clashes saw both sides resort to artillery fire and air strikes on disputed stretches of their 817 km long border. The two countries have competing territorial claims and violence erupts from time to time along their border.

The violence began at a flashpoint near the ancient Ta Moen Thom temple in Thailand’s Surin province and quickly spread to other disputed areas. Cambodian officials accused Thailand of carrying out airstrikes and bombing roads inside its territory.

A ceasefire was brokered by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on July 28, after Mr Trump said he had spoken to the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia.

Mr Trump had threatened to block trade deals unless the fighting stopped, demonstrating the economic gains from accelerating negotiations. A shaky ceasefire has held since then.

earlier this month, Cambodia accuses Thailand of broadcasting high-pitched “ghost voices” The country’s human rights commission along the disputed border urged the United Nations to investigate what it called psychological warfare.

Meanwhile, Mr Trump also signed separate economic agreements with Cambodia and Thailand on Sunday. A White House official said Mr Trump would also sign a key minerals deal with Malaysia during the ASEAN summit.
