Two Australian women cricketers participating in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup were allegedly followed and one of them molested by a man riding a motorcycle in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, police said on Saturday.

The incident took place in Khajrana Road area on Thursday morning and the accused was caught on Friday evening, an official said.

Sub-inspector Nidhi Raghuvanshi said the two cricketers had come out of their hotel and were heading towards a cafe when a man on a motorcycle started following them.

He allegedly touched one of them inappropriately and left, she said.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), both the women contacted their team security officer Danny Simmons and shared their live location with him. Simmons passed it on to the local security liaison officer.

It has been said in the FIR that on the basis of this the police team was successful in reaching the spot immediately.

Assistant Police Commissioner Himani Mishra met both the players, recorded their statements and filed an FIR under sections 74 (use of criminal force to outrage the modesty of a woman) and 78 (stalking) of the Indian Code of Justice (BNS) at the MIG police station.

Raghuvanshi said that a spectator had noted down the number of the suspect’s motorcycle, on the basis of which the accused Akil Khan was caught.

“There are already criminal cases registered against Khan and the matter is under investigation,” he said.

Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) in a statement said it is deeply saddened and shocked by the disturbing incident of misbehavior and inappropriate behavior towards two players.

The association said, “No woman should ever have to endure such trauma, and our thoughts and support are with those affected by this tragic incident. This unfortunate incident has deeply affected all at MPCA, who cherish the values of respect, safety and dignity of women.”

It added that it is truly inspiring to see the players rise above this painful experience and continue to compete with courage and determination, carrying the pride of their country on their shoulders in the match against South Africa.

“Over the years, Indore has earned a proud reputation as a safe venue for visiting teams and dignitaries from other regions. It is deeply painful that the disorderly actions of one individual have caused so much damage and cast a shadow on the city’s image. As hosts, the MPCA sincerely apologizes to the Australian women’s team for this extremely sad and unfortunate incident while in our city, which is a place of safety, grace and hospitality. Known for.” The cricketing body said.

It added that the local police and administration have demonstrated consistent diligence in ensuring the safety of the players during all official activities, and the teams were provided adequate security to visit places such as the Mahakal Temple and entertainment venues of their choice.

It said that in this unfortunate incident, it is necessary to investigate whether the players had sought security cover to move out of the hotel, or whether the movement took place in the absence of any request for security.

Cricket Australia also confirmed that a motorcyclist approached two members of the women’s team and touched them inappropriately while they were visiting a café in Indore. It said the team security reported the matter to the police, who are handling it.
