New Delhi, October 23 (IANS) Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday announced that 3,635 consumers have received a rebate of Rs 9.17 crore under the Delhi Jal Board’s water waiver scheme.
In a post on Twitter, the Chief Minister said that dues worth Rs 6.56 crore have been paid by water consumers under the amnesty scheme.
On October 14, CM Gupta launched the ‘Delay Payment Surcharge Waiver Scheme’ and ‘Unauthorized Connection Regularization Scheme’, offering up to 100 per cent waiver of late payment surcharge for domestic water consumers.
Surcharge waiver on payment of outstanding bills is available till January 31, 2026.
While sharing details of both these people-oriented schemes, he said, “Both these schemes have brought significant relief to the residents of Delhi and will make the water management system more public-friendly and transparent.”
In a post on X, CM Gupta said, “The government has reduced the penalty for unauthorized domestic consumers from Rs 25,000 to just Rs 1,000, while for commercial connections it has been reduced from Rs 61,000 to Rs 5,000. The move will also pave the way for millions of consumers to be connected to future schemes and uninterrupted water supply.”
He said the capital’s water delivery system is being made more efficient, accountable and technology-enabled through revamping and modernizing the system of Delhi Jal Board, new billing system, transparent revenue management and formation of 34 new divisions.
CM Gupta attacked the previous AAP government for “curbing” the powers of the DJB and “hindering” development.
CM Gupta said, “Almost half of Delhi survives on unauthorized water pipe connections in unplanned colonies. Earlier, files of development works kept rotating from one desk to another, but the actual work was not done on the ground.”
On this occasion, PWD Minister Pravesh Verma highlighted the efforts of the government to improve the water supply system in the national capital.
