When it comes to tidying up and projects around the house, the bathroom is one of the best places to start.

After all, taking a moment to set the scene, pampering yourself with some favorite scents to reduce stress, and boost one’s overall mood is at the top of the sensory checklist… especially if you’re yearning for a spa-like sanctuary.

Here, experts share today’s top bathroom trends to inspire some self-care…

bathroom growing in size and importance

“We’ve seen a notable shift toward larger bathroom footprints,” says Kia Kelly-Paine, home design trends expert at Houzz.

Kelly-Paine says this trend shows that people are rethinking the role of bathrooms, and rather than seeing them as merely functional, they’re looking to create comfortable relaxation spaces.

Milena Vallier, lead designer at My Bespoke Rooms, says: “Today, they are considered true wellness sanctuaries within the home.

“We’re seeing a strong shift toward spa-inspired spaces, featuring calming, nature-based schemes and earthy palettes like soft browns, sage green and warm terracotta.

“Layered textures and tactile materials, from broken stone and microcement to reed wood details, add a sense of depth and luxury.”

Additionally, Vallier says customers are increasingly prioritizing comfort features like minimalist glass-screened walk-in showers, sculptural freestanding bathrooms as centerpieces and the comfort of underfloor heating to create a hotel-like feel at home.

minimalist style is on the rise

“While contemporary and modern remain the dominant bathroom styles, scandinavian And Japanese styles are growing in popularity, Kelly-Paine highlights. “Showing a preference for minimalist and natural aesthetics.”

While matte black and brushed brass fixtures remain popular for their contemporary edge, Vallier says there’s a noticeable move toward cooler finishes like chrome, brushed nickel and steel.

“Those bring a sophisticated, timeless beauty and are easy to maintain,” she adds. “Fluted glass, sculptural lighting, and built-in niches are also very popular key details – elevating the bathroom design and giving it a special feel.”

Freestanding vanities are gaining momentum

As in past years, floating vanities are the top choice, with more than half of homeowners choosing them, Kelly-Paine outlines.

However, she says as freestanding vanity units have become more popular, custom vanity units are also on the rise.

“Vanity units really set off a bathroom, they’re where function meets style,” says Nicole Burnett, interior designer and owner of Wise Owl Interiors.

“Floating vanities are still a favorite, especially in smaller bathrooms, as they free up floor space – and make the room feel more open.”

Burnett adds: “But I’m seeing more people leaning toward freestanding designs, too… They offer extra storage, come in lots of beautiful styles, and can really make a statement in this area.”

sustainability is more mainstream

Whether we want to save costs or be eco-friendly, sustainable features have become more of a priority, says Kelly-Paine.

“LED lighting was the top sustainable feature for renovating homeowners, but water efficiency was also one of the biggest considerations, followed by timeless design and energy-efficient features,” explains Houzz home design trends expert.

Emma Marie, founder of Emma Marie Styling, says: “When considering sustainability in a bathroom renovation, our first step is always to research the origins of the sanitaryware, furniture and tiles we specify – essentially it is important to understand their story.

“We support locally made items, from concrete basins to exclusive glass shower screens, celebrating the craftsmanship in each item.”

Sustainable options, like terrazzo eco countertops, which are made of 75% recycled materials like ceramic and glass, add spacious character to small-space bathrooms, explains Mary.

She adds, “Combining responsible sourcing with expert craftsmanship creates timeless bathrooms that look beautiful and feel authentic for years to come.”

Functionality drives the makeover – but style matters

While functional upgrades remain the biggest driver for bathroom renovations, Kelly-Paine says style upgrades have become a bigger motivator… New homeowners want to personalize their spaces.

“Bathroom renovations are always popular because they are very hard-working spaces, but most clients want to completely refresh the look during this time,” Burnett highlights.

“Whether it’s updating lighting and color choices or changing the entire style, creating a bathroom that feels calming and thoughtful is always at the top of the list.”

She says there’s a real focus on balancing function with aesthetics. “I still see customers gravitating towards natural, earthy colors, but with richer colors…burgundy, green and blue are appearing more and more.

“Natural woods like oak and dark teak remain in ground spaces, while a contemporary modern feel is helping to blend old and new, especially in older homes,” says Burnett.
