Chandigarh, Oct 23 (IANS) Strongly believing in decentralization of authority to promote community policing, Haryana Director General of Police OP Singh has been doing late night patrolling to assess police operational efficiency, besides working out in the gym at night to stay tough against criminals.

The DGP has asked Superintendents of Police (SP), the police chief of a district, to become the face against crime and they should be in uniform and armed round the clock.

He is also reaching out to lower levels of police administration by talking to heads of police stations to ensure public safety. The DGP said he is also committed to improving the living and working conditions of police personnel.

In a post on X, Singh posted a video saying, “Late at night is no excuse to miss your daily workout.”

In another post late on Wednesday night, he wrote, “I am on night patrol for the next four hours. I want to know about the presence, working status and problems faced by the police personnel deployed in ‘112’ vehicles (emergency response vehicles), police posts, police stations and inter-state and inter-district posts.”

Additionally, the DGP spoke to the Station House Officer (SHO) of a police station in Saha in Ambala district for about 70 minutes. “It was decided that the district officers should remain in uniform and armed.

The Superintendent of Police should have a group chat every day with the CIA (Crime Investigation Agency) in-charges and police station in-charges and assess which criminal can commit a serious crime in the next week.

“Employ a team of four to five personnel for man-to-man marking behind each one. The idea is to increase operational difficulties for criminals should they be caught. The SP was also asked to become the face of the police against crime. Keep people informed about anti-crime operations through media and other means. Capacity building,” said DGP Singh.

In another post, the DGP said that the SHO of City Shahabad police station talked about the auction of seized motorcycles lying in the police station and the lack of police force in the police station and constant interference by farmer unions in Kurukshetra.

The DGP assured them of providing additional personnel after the passing out parade of 2,000 police constables. Earlier this week, the DGP shared that he had recently received a call late at night, which revealed that “the caller’s child had made the call by mistake”.

Before hanging up the phone, he told the child, “The phone teaches fast swiping, not slow smiling.”

DGP Singh shared screenshots of the WhatsApp chat he had with the child’s father and a YouTube link by Dr Rachel Sharman on the effects of too much screen time for children.

“Let children grow up with mud on their hands, not glass in their palms,” he warned. They cautioned that excessive screen time is directly linked to increased risks of depression and anxiety, particularly associated with video gaming and nighttime screen use, which disrupts sleep and activates brain reward pathways associated with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) behavior.
