Kolkata: A massive fire broke out in a printing press in Amherst Street area of North Kolkata. Officials said no casualties have been reported so far.
Seven fire tenders were present on the spot to extinguish the fire. Firefighters were working on a war footing to control the fire. After the fire, the entire area is covered with black smoke. However, no one was injured in the fire.
The fire broke out when people were busy preparing for the popular festival of ‘Bhai Fonta (Bhai Dooj)’.
Since it is a crowded area, firefighters were facing challenges in extinguishing the fire.
Some firefighters were seen wearing gas masks as black smoke spread over the area. However, it was not clear how the fire started. The initial estimate of the fire department is that the fire may have occurred due to short circuit.
A fire department official said, “We are trying to control the fire. Our firefighters are facing inconvenience due to the heavy smoke.”
It is being told that this morning the local people saw black smoke coming out of the printing press. The local fire department and police were immediately informed. First of all, three fire engines reached the spot one by one. However, the area is so crowded that firefighters had to walk a few meters to the spot. Later four more fire engines reached the spot.
Since it was a printing press, a large amount of inflammable material was stored there, officials said. Due to this the fire spread immediately and became severe in no time. The surrounding area was filled with black smoke.
According to police, many nearby shops were damaged in the fire. However, firefighters were working to prevent the fire from spreading further.
Just two days ago, a massive fire broke out in a dye factory in Khardah in North 24 Parganas district. The fire also spread to a nearby T-shirt manufacturing factory. About 20 fire engines were used to control the fire.
