Guwahati, Oct 22 (IANS) In a series of well-coordinated counter-insurgency operations in the northeast, the Assam Rifles has successfully foiled repeated attempts by insurgent groups to target security forces in recent weeks, sources said on Wednesday.
Sources said the banned United Liberation Front of Assam-Independent (ULFA-I) and National Socialist Council of Nagalim (YA) are mainly responsible for these attacks on security forces in Assam and Arunachal.
“Through meticulous planning, proactive deployment grid and effective intelligence integration, the security forces have demonstrated exceptional operational preparedness and resolve,” sources said.
According to sources, on October 16, militants of the NSCN-K (YA) faction launched a standoff attack on Headman Camp in Changlang district of South Arunachal Pradesh, which was effectively foiled by immediate and rapid response.
The next day (on 17 October), ULFA(I) militants attempted a similar attack on the Kakopathar camp in Tinsukia district of eastern Assam.
Alert troops retaliated decisively, causing casualties to the insurgent group and arresting an over ground worker (OGW) involved in the conspiracy.
In response, Assam Rifles intensified its operations, activating an extensive counter-terrorism grid supported by modern surveillance assets, drones and intelligence-based high-tech teams.
The advanced grid culminated in a successful attack in 6 Mile Lekang Khampti areas of Namsai district of South Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday (October 21), resulting in neutralization of a ULFA (I) cadre and recovery of war-like stores.
During searches of the areas, the body of a militant was recovered, identified as self-styled Sergeant Major Ivon Axom of ULFA-I. A rifle, one rocket propelled grenade (RPG) round and three rucksacks were recovered from the spot along with the body of the terrorist.
Sources claimed that these quick and precise actions have not only foiled the nefarious designs of the insurgents but have also re-established the morale of the security forces in the entire area.
It is being told that the rebel groups are now on the run, their networks have been disrupted and the leadership is under pressure.
Sources said the steadfast role, professional planning and steadfast implementation of the Assam Rifles continues to maintain peace and stability in the North-East of India – reaffirming their legacy as the ‘Sentinels of the North-East’.
