A fire broke out Wednesday morning in a tent outside the Serbian parliament building, which was set up in March as an apparent human shield against the anti-government protests that have rocked Serbia for months and posed the most serious challenge to Vucic’s rule.
The camp, known colloquially as “Cassiland”, encompasses white-tent settlements in and around the park and the public square near the Parliament House and the President’s Office.
Police No formal statement issued. The footage shows a fire erupting and engulfing a tent after several loud gunshot-like sounds. Several police officers hid around the tent camp, took out guns and told people to hide.
Vucic described it as a “terrible terrorist attack”, saying at a hastily called press conference that “this is my political decision” because the man had used a firearm “for the purpose of creating public danger and with an undoubtedly political purpose.” Pro-government tabloids alleged a government rival was behind the alleged shooting.
Vucic also showed video footage of the incident and that the alleged shooter confessed upon arrest that he wanted the police to kill him, and that he was “disturbed by the tents” in Belgrade.
“It will take time for that to happen,” said Vucic, who has repeatedly accused anti-government protesters of violence, though his protests have been largely peaceful. “There were countless calls for this (shooting).”

The incident came ahead of a rally on November 1, the first anniversary of the collapse of the railway station canopy, which sparked mass youth-led protests against Vucic’s authoritarian rule.
