Kolkata, October 22 (IANS) Police on Wednesday made another arrest in connection with the attack on a female junior doctor attached to Uluberia Sarat Chandra Chatterjee Medical College and Hospital in Uluberia in Howrah district adjacent to Kolkata on Monday evening.
The person arrested on Wednesday has been identified as Sheikh Samrat. This is the fourth arrest in this connection since Tuesday.
District police sources said Samrat is a close associate of the main accused in the case, Sheikh Babulal, who is a traffic home guard attached to Uluberia outpost of West Bengal Police. He was present there when the doctor was attacked on Monday evening.
He will be produced before a district court in Howrah on Wednesday and the government lawyer will seek his police custody.
Meanwhile, Babulal, considered a close aide of the ruling Trinamool Congress, had already been relieved of traffic home guard duties. The doctor had also accused Babulal of threatening to rape.
Babulal and two other accused, arrested earlier in the case, were produced in Howrah district court on Tuesday and the court sent them to three-day police custody.
Let us remind you that at the time of the attack on Monday evening, a female junior doctor was working in the maternity ward. After examining the traffic home guard’s relative, she went to the hospital toilet and was sitting there, when Babulal along with other people attacked her.
The junior doctor alleged that one of the attackers twisted his hand while the other allegedly slapped his neck. It is alleged that some people in the group, allegedly Babulal, even threatened to rape her and kill her. Later the ward nurse and other staff saved him from the attackers.
The junior doctor lodged a written complaint at Uluberia police station on Monday night. Based on his complaint, the police have started investigating the incident. After initial investigation, three people including Babulal were arrested on Tuesday morning.
