As part of the deal, which convinced Shaker to turn himself in, the convictions he received during the escape would be dropped and he would be interrogated in preparation for trial on new charges of committing crimes against the military.

Tuesday’s court appearance was a preliminary questioning session.

During the 2013 shootout between followers of fundamentalist Sunni cleric Sheikh Ahmed al-Assir and the Lebanese army, which left at least 18 soldiers dead, Shaker appeared in a video uploaded to YouTube, calling his enemies pigs and dogs, and taunting the army, saying, “We have two rotting corpses that we snatched away from you yesterday,” an apparent reference to the slain soldiers.
