US President Trump calls PM Modi on Diwali, says both want to see Russia-Ukraine war end

On the occasion of Diwali, there was a phone conversation between United States President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and both discussed issues ranging from ending the Ukraine-Russia war to remaining united against terrorism.

President Trump said he spoke to PM Modi and discussed trade and efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war, with PM Modi reportedly committing to “reduce” purchases of Russian oil.

“I love the people of India. We are working on some great agreements between our countries. I spoke to Prime Minister Modi today and we have very good relations,” PM Modi told reporters at the White House.

He said, “He’s not going to buy a lot of oil from Russia. He wants to see that war end as much as I do. He wants to see the war between Russia and Ukraine end. He’s not going to buy a lot of oil. So he cut it down a long time ago and he’s been cutting it down all the time.”

Prime Minister Modi appreciated Trump’s call but did not mention the discussion related to buying Russian oil. However, he highlighted the cooperation between both India and the US against counter-terrorism.

The US President celebrated Diwali at the White House, where India’s Ambassador to the US Vinay Mohan Kwatra and US officials were also present.

“I am honored to join President Donald J. Trump at the White House today to celebrate Diwali. On behalf of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, I wish him a happy Diwali and thank him for this beautiful gesture,” Kwatra said on Twitter.

“Happy Diwali to all those celebrating, especially the vibrant 50 lakh Indian diaspora living in the US,” he said.
