Kolkata, Oct 21 (IANS) The statements of two of the six accused in the rape case of a second-year medical student of a private medical college and hospital at Durgapur in West Bengal’s West Burdwan district in a forest area outside the college earlier this month were recorded before a judicial magistrate in a court on Tuesday.
Insiders at the Asansol-Durgapur police commissionerate said the statements of two of the six accused persons were recorded under Section 183 of the Indian Civil Security Code (BNSS) 2023, which allows a judicial magistrate to record statements and statements from an accused person or witness during investigation.
After recording the statement before the Judicial Magistrate on Tuesday, both the accused were sent back to custody.
All the six accused will be produced again in the same district court of Durgapur on Wednesday.
Now, with the statements of two of the six accused being recorded before the Judicial Magistrate, there is a possibility that both the accused persons may turn approver in the case.
Even after six days of questioning, the police have found discrepancies in the statements of the Durgapur gang rape victim’s male friend and five arrested youths from the local village during their investigation.
Officials said the police are trying to find some missing links in this gang rape case.
On October 10, a second-year medical student from Odisha was allegedly gang-raped by five men in a forested area outside a private medical college and hospital in Durgapur in West Burdwan district.
Based on the complaint of the victim, the police had arrested all the five accused in the first case.
Police said that only one person was involved in the physical and sexual assault of the medical student.
Later the police arrested the victim’s male friend.
The male friend was arrested after investigators found inconsistencies in his answers during questioning.
He is also currently in police custody.
Meanwhile, the victim’s father has demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigation into the incident to quickly punish the culprits.
