Firefighters in Hungary have brought under control a blaze that broke out overnight at the country’s main oil refinery, authorities and Hungarian energy company MOL said Tuesday. No injuries have been reported.
A fire broke out on Monday night at a processing unit at the Danube refinery in Szalombatta, south of the capital. budapestMOL said in a statement posted on the website of the Budapest Stock Exchange on Tuesday. The reasons for the incident are being investigated.
MOL said emergency protocols were followed and units not affected by the fire are being gradually restarted as damage assessment continues. The company said it would focus on ensuring domestic fuel supplies and was considering whether to tap Hungary’s strategic reserves.
Prime Minister viktor orban on Tuesday said he had spoken to MOL officials and the interior minister about the fire. “Hungary’s fuel supply is safe,” Orban wrote on social media, adding that the circumstances surrounding the fire were being investigated “as thoroughly as possible.”
Officials said the air quality around the refinery is being continuously monitored and no readings have been found above the health limits.
According to the Hungarian Disaster Management Authority, the facility’s own fire brigade was the first on the scene, supported by professional firefighters from nearby cities.
Eyewitnesses told state news agency MTI that flames and smoke were visible from several kilometers away.
