Chandigarh: Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said on Tuesday that in an intelligence-based operation, Punjab Police, in coordination with central agencies, nabbed two terrorists Mehakdeep Singh and Aditya from Amritsar and recovered a rocket propelled grenade.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused were in contact with an ISI operative from Pakistan, who had sent the weapons.
The rocket propelled grenade was intended to carry out a targeted terrorist attack. A first information report (FIR) has been lodged at the police station of Gharinda in Amritsar district.
Further investigation is underway to trace the entire network, the DGP said.
Last week, in a major intelligence-based operation, the Amritsar Commissionerate Police had busted a cross-border organized arms and narcotics smuggling module linked to Pakistan and arrested three of its operatives and recovered 10 sophisticated pistols along with 500 grams of opium from their possession.
The recovered weapons included four 9mm Glock pistols and six .30 bore pistols. DGP Yadav said investigation revealed that the arrested accused were running an inter-district smuggling ring and were linked to Pakistan-based handlers.
The recovered weapons were to be supplied to gangsters and criminals to promote illegal activities in Punjab.
Police Commissioner (Amritsar) Gurpreet Singh Bhullar had said that accused Rajan was initially arrested with a .30 bore pistol and a quantity of opium and after interrogating him the entire network was exposed.
During the investigation, Surinder Singh was later arrested from which three .30 bore pistols and one 9 mm pistol were recovered from his possession, he said, adding that further investigation resulted in the arrest of the third accused Jagjit Singh from whom five pistols including three Glock 9 mm and two .30 bore were recovered.
He had said that accused Jagjit Singh had returned from Dubai four months ago. Surinder’s village is located close to the international border in Jalalabad in Fazilka district, while Jagjit’s village is near the border in Tarn Taran district.
He said the accused were retrieving drone-delivered consignments from Amritsar to Fazilka and Tarn Taran sectors and were supplying these consignments directly and onward through location-based delivery systems.
